What is a process addiction?

A process addiction is a repeated behavior that becomes compulsive. The behavior may create temporary relief, escape, excitement, validation, or emotional regulation, but over time it can become increasingly difficult to control.

Process addictions may include:

  • Gambling
  • Compulsive sexual behavior
  • Pornography use
  • Technology or internet overuse
  • Gaming
  • Shopping or spending patterns
  • Relationship or attachment-driven behaviors

These concerns are not simply “bad habits.” They often involve emotional pain, nervous system dysregulation, shame, secrecy, trauma, anxiety, depression, or co-occurring substance use.

When to seek help

You do not need to wait until everything falls apart to ask for support.

It may be time to reach out if the behavior is:

  • Difficult to stop or limit
  • Creating secrecy or shame
  • Affecting your relationships
  • Interfering with work, school, or daily responsibilities
  • Causing financial, emotional, or relational consequences
  • Used to escape stress, loneliness, anxiety, or depression
  • Continuing despite promises to stop
  • Connected to substance use or mental health symptoms

Our approach to process addiction treatment

Treatment begins with a confidential assessment. We work to understand the behavior, what triggers it, what consequences it has created, and what emotional or clinical factors may be keeping it active.

Your individualized treatment plan may include:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Skills-based treatment
  • Relapse prevention planning
  • Emotional regulation work
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Family or partner involvement when appropriate
  • Accountability planning
  • Relationship and attachment-focused support
  • Coordination with outside providers when clinically appropriate

At HBH, treatment is not built around shame. It is built around clarity, structure, and care designed for the person in front of us.
