What is group therapy?

Group therapy is clinician-led treatment delivered in a small group setting.

Unlike casual peer support, group therapy is structured, clinically guided, and connected to each client’s broader treatment plan. Sessions may focus on emotional regulation, relapse prevention, communication, trauma-informed coping, relationship patterns, accountability, or skill-building.

Group therapy allows clients to practice new tools in real time while receiving support, feedback, and perspective from both clinicians and peers.

Group therapy within our outpatient programs

Group therapy may be included across multiple levels of care at HBH, depending on clinical need and program fit.

Partial Hospitalization Program

In PHP, group therapy provides daily structure, skills practice, support, and clinical engagement for adults needing a high level of outpatient care.

Intensive Outpatient Program

In IOP, group therapy helps clients maintain consistent support while practicing recovery skills in daily life.

Evening IOP

Evening groups allow adults to participate in structured treatment while balancing work, school, parenting, or other daytime responsibilities.

Outpatient and continuing care

As clients step down, group therapy may continue to support long-term recovery, connection, accountability, and growth.

A safe and respectful setting

We understand that group therapy can feel intimidating at first.

Many people worry about being judged, misunderstood, or pressured to share too much. At HBH, groups are structured with emotional safety, confidentiality, and clinical care in mind.

Clients are encouraged to participate at a pace that supports their treatment while respecting the group process and the privacy of others.

Group therapy is part of designed care

At Heights Behavioral Health, group therapy is not a standalone activity added to fill time. It is part of a larger individualized treatment plan.

Your clinical team considers your history, symptoms, goals, support system, and level of care when determining which groups may be most appropriate.

That means group therapy is selected with purpose and integrated into the broader work happening in individual therapy, family support, skills practice, relapse prevention, and continuing care.
